Intervista a Russell Marsden dei Band of Skulls

I Band of Skulls non sono proprio gli ultimi arrivati: hanno alle spalle una decennale e solida carriera tra dischi e tour in tutto il mondo. Hanno suonato come headliner in tutto il mondo e sono stati in tour con band famose come Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age e Black Keys. Guidati dai due membri originali, Russell Marsden (voce e chitarra) ed Emma Richardson (voce e basso), i Band of Skulls, provenienti da Southampton, presentano nel loro ultimo disco un sound rock garage elettronico aperto a sonorità più radiofoniche e ad uno stile più maturo rispetto ai lavori precedenti. Ne abbiamo parlato proprio con Russell.

FR: How were the Band of Skulls born?

Come sono nati i Band of Skulls?

RM: The band was born from the ashes of our first band Fleeing New York, we had one album under that name and then we evolved into Band of Skulls. One of the songs from that era is ‘Hollywood Bowl’.

La band nacque dalle ceneri del nostro primo gruppo, i Fleeing New York, sotto il cui nome registrammo un album, poi ci evolvemmo nei Band of Skulls. Uno dei brani di quel periodo si chiama ‘Hollywood Bowl’.

FR: How did you choose the band’s name?

Come avete scelto il nome della band?

RM: We were sitting in the London venue for our club night, our manager said that it was the deadline for a new name. So we sat around and argued about the pros and cons. Band of Skulls seemed to fit and we were surprised it hadn’t been taken already. As three songwriters, and three heads full of different ideas, the name just felt right.

Eravamo seduti in un club di Londra, dove avremmo suonato. Il nostro manager ci disse che era giunto il momento di dare alla band un nuovo nome. Così valutammo insieme i pro ed i contro di ogni idea. Band of Skulls ci sembrò perfetto e fummo sorpresi nello scoprire che non era già stato utilizzato da nessuno. Essendo tre autori, con tre teste piene di idee differenti, ci sembrò il nome giusto.

FR: Who are your biggest influences?

Quali generi, artisti o gruppi del passato hanno ispirato la vostra musica?

RM: We started with the classic British rock ones. The Beatles, the Stones. Then onto Hendrix and the Floyd. I was personally into my dad’s punk records. Magazine, Devo and the Buzzcocks. These days it’s much wider. We can get inspiration from almost anywhere. New bands, old forgotten records, there is no limit.

Abbiamo iniziato ascoltando i classici del rock inglese. I Beatles, i Rolling Stones. In seguito siamo stati sicuramente influenzati da Hendrix, dai Pink Floyd. Personalmente, amavo molto i dischi punk che appartenevano a mio padre. I Magazine, i Devo ed i Buzzcocks. Al giorno d’oggi le nostre influenze si sono ampliate. Possiamo trovare fonti d’ispirazione quasi ovunque, sia nelle nuove band emergenti, che in vecchi dischi dimenticati: non ci sono limiti.

FR: How do you look at yourself today, after a solid ten-year career, inclusive of many albums and worldwide tours?

Come vi vedete oggi, dopo una solida carriera decennale alle spalle, tra dischi inediti e tour in giro per il mondo, anche come spalla a band famose?

RM: We have been very fortunate, but it’s all come with a lot of hard work and sacrifice. We are very proud to have a 10th anniversary of our debut record this year. Just a moment to look back, and then on to the next challenge.

Siamo stati molto fortunati, ma è arrivato tutto grazie ad una bella dose di duro lavoro e tanti sacrifici. Siamo molto fieri di festeggiare il decimo anniversario del nostro primo album, quest’anno. Un breve momento in cui ci guarderemo alle spalle, per poi ripartire verso la prossima sfida.

FR: In your opinion, how is the British rock scene today?

Secondo voi, com’è oggi la scena rock britannica?

RM: They say it’s dead, and then I go and see lots of new exciting bands every week on tour. So they must be wrong. I hope we have played some small part in representing real music in the last ten years. If that’s the case, then it’s all been worth it.

Dicono che sia morta, ma poi vedo tantissime nuove eccitanti band in tour, ogni settimana. Quindi penso che si sbaglino. Speriamo di aver contribuito, almeno in piccola parte, a rappresentare la vera musica, negli ultimi dieci anni. Se ci siamo riusciti, ne è sicuramente valsa la pena.

FR: After the split from Matt Hayward, how the collaboration between you and Julian Dorio from Eagles of Death Metal started?

Dopo la separazione da Matt Hayward, com’è nata la collaborazione con Julian Dorio degli Eagles of Death Metal?

RM: Julian is a great friend of us from back on our first American tour. He heard we were a duo and phoned up from Nashville. He saved the day just by saying: “I’d love to play with y’all”. After that we got him over to Southampton and then we did some gigs. It was a natural progression to get Julian on the record, so it was all really natural. We are excited to see what’s possible next.

Julian è un nostro caro amico sin da tempi del nostro primo tour americano. Aveva saputo che eravamo diventati un duo, così ci ha telefonato direttamente da Nashville. Ci ha tolto dai guai semplicemente dicendo “mi piacerebbe suonare con voi”. Successivamente ci ha raggiunti a Southampton ed abbiamo fatto alcune date insieme. Il disco è stato la naturale progressione di questo percorso. Non vediamo l’ora di scoprire cosa ci riserverà il futuro.

FR: Let’s talk about the new album. What’s the concept of Love is All You Love?

Parliamo del nuovo album: qual è il concept di Love is All You Love?

RM: Its message is positivity to overcome negativity. It’s drawn upon our own situation and reflects the world we were living in, as we wrote the songs. There were many darker songs, but we wanted the whole album to be euphoric and uplifting. Maybe the dark album is next?!

Il messaggio del disco è semplice: la positività che sconfigge la negatività. È concetto che è stato sviluppato sulla base delle nostre esperienze e riflette il mondo in cui viviamo, come abbiamo scritto nelle canzoni. Avevamo da parte molti brani più oscuri, ma volevamo che l’intero disco fosse euforico ed ottimista. L’album dark potrebbe essere il prossimo, chi lo sa?

FR: Love is All You Love, compared to your previous records, shows up with more radio sounds. How far is it from your first projects?

Love is All You Love si presenta con sonorità più radiofoniche rispetto ai vostri lavori precedenti: quanto si discosta dalle sonorità e tematiche degli altri dischi? Come nasce questa svolta pop?

RM: Well, this record was really a collaboration with our friend Richard X and I think you can hear his style and production all over the record. We wanted the challenge to work in a non traditional way and experiment with our sound. He helped us to move forward from our previous sound, I’m sure our next record will be different again.

Beh, in questo disco si può sentire chiaramente la collaborazione con il nostro amico Richard X. Volevamo lavorare ad una sfida che non fosse convenzionale e sperimentare con il nostro sound. Richard ci ha aiutati a distaccarci dal nostro sound precedente e sono sicuro che il nostro prossimo disco sarà ancora diverso.

FR: Do you really believe in a possible change of humankind, in such a hard historical moment?

Credete davvero in un possibile cambiamento del genere umano, in questo difficile momento storico?

RM: It is the only answer, our biggest issue right now has to be the environmental one. After that, I hope the current political mood will improve. If music can share ideas and hope, then it’s worth making.

È l’unica scelta che abbiamo. La nostra principale preoccupazione, al momento, deve essere la questione ambientale. In seguito, spero che migliori anche il clima politico. Se la musica può veicolare idee e speranza, allora vale la pena farla.

FR: Could Love and manners truly be the solution to all of our battles?

L’ Amore e le buone maniere possono essere veramente la soluzione a tutte le nostre battaglie?

RM: Love, and empathy perhaps. It’s never going to be a perfect world. We can all start with ourselves and make a small but significant difference.

L’amore e forse l’empatia. Non sarà mai un mondo perfetto, ma possiamo iniziare da noi stessi e fare la differenza, seppur piccola, ma significativa.

FR: After a short UK Tour last April, you’re going to start a long and important American tour. Are you planning, later, any gig in Europe, Italy included?

Dopo qualche data in patria lo scorso aprile, a breve partirete per un lungo ed importante tour americano. Successivamente, avete in programma anche un tour europeo che tocchi anche l’Italia?

RM: Yeah we are excited to play some bigger shows this year. We would love to return to Italy. We were there last with Queens of the Stone Age and it was awesome. We hope to see you all in the near future. Graze Mille.
