Fotografie ROCK è sempre più internazionale. Stavolta ci siamo spinti in terra norvegese, intervistando i Bokassa, la band scelta dai Metallica per aprire i loro concerti del Worldwired Tour 2019. A rispondere alle nostre domande è stato il batterista, Olav Dowkes.

Fotografie ROCK is increasingly international. This time we pushed through the Norwegian lands, interviewing Bokassa, the band chosen by Metallica to open their World Wired Tour 2019 concerts. Answering our questions is the drummer, Olav Dowkes.

Quando e come nasce il progetto Bokassa?

When and how was the Bokassa project born? 

La band nacque quando il nostro primo bassista, Lars Eric Andreassen, mi chiese se fossi stato interessato a suonare la batteria in un progetto che aveva “insieme ad un tizio del lavoro”. Alla fine ci trovammo a jammare un giorno nell’Aprile del 2013 e ci piaceva così tanto quello che sentivamo che da quel momento abbiamo concentrato tutte le nostre energie sulla band.

The band started when our first bassist Lars Erik Andreassen asked me if I would be interested in playing drums for a project he had “with a guy from his work”. Eventually we ended up jamming together one day in April of 2013, we all really liked what we were hearing, and have since that day put all of our focus into the band. 

Come nasce l’idea del nome della band? Perché proprio il nome di un dittatore africano?

How did you choose the band’s name? Why did you pick an African dictator’s name? 

Dal momento che i testi delle nostre canzoni spesso volgono verso le atrocità del mondo, abbiamo pensato che chiamarci con il nome di un feroce dittatore fosse calzante. Crediamo, inoltre, che certi aspetti della storia non debbano essere messi a tacere e avere un nome così spinge la gente a ricordare il passato, affinché cose del genere non accadano più.

As the lyrical content of our songs often revolve around the atrocities of the world, we thought that naming ourselves after a tyrannical dictator would be quite fitting. We also believe that certain aspects of history should not be hushed down and by having a name like this it forces people to somewhat be reminded of the past so not to let things like that happen again. 

Il vostro stile mescola la velocità e la violenza dell’hardcore punk e del thrash metal, la tecnica dell’heavy metal ed il ritmo cadenzato del groove metal, senza rinunciare però alla melodia. Quali sono stati i generi, musicisti e gruppi che hanno influenzato il vostro stile? 

Your style mixes the violence and the speed of hardcore punk and thrash metal, with the technique of heavy metal and the lilting rhythm of groove metal, without losing anything on the melody. Who are your biggest sources of inspiration? 

Dal momento che la vostra domanda cita quattro generi, non sarete sorpresi nel sentire che le nostre fonti d’ispirazione arrivano da una lunga lista di artisti. Se le qualità melodiche di band punk come i Bad Religion e i NOFX sono state sicuramente predominanti nella nostra musica, allo stesso modo lo sono stati i riff accattivanti e le parti di batteria tipici di band quali Pantera o Slayer. Altri gruppi che dobbiamo menzionare sono sicuramente i The Bronx e i Fu Manchu.

As your question mentioned in all four genres, you might not be surprised to hear that our inspirations come from a long list of artists. The melodic qualities of punk bands like Bad Religion and NOFX are certainly prominent in our music, as well as groovy riffs and drum parts from a band like Pantera or Slayer. Other bands like The Bronx and Fu Manchu certainly have to be mentioned as well. 

Com’è nato il vostro debut album Divide and Conquer?

How was your debut album, Divide and Conquer, born? 

Le canzoni di quel disco esistevano già da un po’ di tempo e a quel punto della nostra storia tutto quello che avevamo pubblicato erano solo EP e singoli. Tenendo conto di ciò, sentimmo che era giunto il momento per noi di registrare il nostro album di debutto. Non ci mettemmo molto ad inciderlo, ma ricordo che impiegammo un sacco di tempo nelle operazioni di missaggio e masterizzazione, cosa che all’epoca fu parecchio frustrante per chiunque vi fosse coinvolto! Alla fine, comunque, ne uscimmo vincitori ed il risultato fu un album di cui eravamo estremamente fieri e che è parte integrante del nostro percorso come band, fino ad oggi.

The songs on that record had existed for quite some time, and at that point in our history all we had released was EPs and singles. So with that in mind we felt that the time was ripe for us to record our debut album. It didn’t take long to record, but I remember we spent a really long time mixing and mastering it, which at the time was frustrating for everyone involved! But in the end we all prevailed and the result was an album that we were extremely proud of and that has been integral to where we are as a band today. 

La produzione ed il management del gruppo sono curati interamente da voi, giusto?

It’s the band itself who takes care of the production and the management, is it right? 

Per quanto riguarda Divide & Conquer abbiamo fatto tutto da soli, mentre il disco successivo l’abbiamo coprodotto con Yngve Andersen. Fino agli inizi del 2019 curavamo anche il nostro stesso management, ora siamo rappresentati da Martijn Swier della Endless Music.

For Divide & Conquer we produced that album ourselves, our next album Crimson Riders was co-produced by us and Yngve Andersen. Up until early 2019 we have also managed ourselves, now we are represented by Martijn Swier at Endless Music. 

Di cosa parlano i vostri testi? Chi li compone e chi si occupa, invece, della parte strumentale?

What are your lyrics about? Who’s the lyrics writer and who does the instrumental part? 

I testi parlano di tutto, dai culti, alla celebrazione della vita e alle pattuglie di confine. Il nostro cantante e chitarrista Jørn Kaarstad scrive e compone i brani da solo, poi solitamente li suoniamo un po’ insieme prima di decidere se siano pronti per essere registrati.

The lyrics are about everything from cults, to celebrating life and border patrols. Our singer/guitarst Jørn Kaarstad writes our lyrics and the songs themselves, usually we play around with the songs for some time before saying that it is done and ready for recording.

Ciò che ci ha colpiti di più delle vostre canzoni sono i riff. Ad esempio, il riff della strofa di Five Finger Fuckhead, è parecchio simile al sound dei Metallica di Kill ‘em All. Cosa ne pensate?

The thing that most impressed us are your songs’ riffs. For example, the verse’s riff of ’Five Finger Fuckhead’, reminds us to the Metallica’s ‘Kill ‘em All’ sound. What do you think about it? 

Personalmente non so dirvi se quel riff sia ispirato a Kill ‘em All oppure no, ma so di per certo che siamo dei grandissimi fan dei Metallica, perciò trovo non sia impossibile che sia stato in un qualche modo influenzato da loro.

I myself can’t really say if that riff is inspired by that or not, but that being said I know that we are huge Metallica fans, so it’s not impossible that it is in some way inspired by that. 

Sappiamo che i Metallica vi hanno voluto come gruppo spalla per il loro tour. Lars Ulrich ha dichiarato: “I Bokassa sono fottutamente bravi. I loro pezzi, il loro stile e la loro energia sono una ventata d’aria fresca. Quando ho ascoltato la loro musica un anno fa, sono andato fuori di testa”.  Che sensazioni provate ad essere in tour con una band famosa come i Metallica?

Metallica wanted you to join them in their tour as support act. Lars Ulrich has stated: “Bokassa are incredibly fucking good. The songs they write, their whole energy and vibe is such a breath of fresh air. When I heard their music a year ago, they blew my head off.” How does it feel being in tour with such a famous band as Metallica? 

È assolutamente surreale essere parte di un qualcosa di così grande! È una possibilità ed un’opportunità che non prendiamo alla leggera e facciamo del nostro meglio per dare al pubblico il massimo di ciò che possiamo offrire loro.

It is totally surreal to be a part of something so big! It is a chance and an opportunity we do not take lightly, and we try our absolute best to give the audience at those shows everything we can offer them. 

Che idea vi siete fatti della scena rock attuale?

In your opinion, how is the rock scene today?

È un’ottima domanda, da una parte ci sono band come i Clutch, che continuano a sfornare dischi incredibili, uno dopo l’altro, che non possono essere definiti in nessun altro modo se non puro rock n’ roll. Dall’altro lato troviamo band che, piuttosto spudoratamente, stanno cercando di suonare come se fossero usciti da un’altra epoca, usando strumentazioni arcaiche per raggiungere il loro scopo, con il risultato che alle mie orecchie appaiono solo come imitazioni scadenti. Comunque non mi sembra che ci sia carenza di rock oggigiorno, perciò non importa cosa piaccia alla gente. Credo che il rock sia ancora vivo e che per questo sia giusto andare avanti.

That is a good question, on one hand you have bands like Clutch that keep on putting out amazing records time after time, and never really calling it anything else that rock n roll. But on the other side you have bands that quite obviously are trying to sound like they come from another era and are using old equipment to sound like it, but at the same time just kinda sound like cheap imitation to my ears. Anyway, there seems to be no shortage to rock these days, so no matter what people like, I do believe that there is enough of it to go around. 

Conoscete qualche rock o metal band italiana?

Do you know any italian metal or rock band?

Veramente no. Non so se sia solo un mio problema, ma sembra che non arrivi molto metal e rock italiano in Norvegia. Però conosco i Goblin.

No, not really. Might just be me, but it doesn’t seem like a lot of Italian metal or rock finds its way to Norway really. I do dig Goblin though.

La scena rock norvegese è da sempre legata allo stereotipo del metal estremo: voi invece come considerate la scena rock del vostro Paese?

The Norwegian rock scene has always been linked to the stereotype of extreme metal. According to you, is this true? How do you look at your country’s music? 

È innegabile come le band estreme, che sono state parte dell’intera scena black metal degli anni ‘90, abbiano avuto un enorme impatto sulla musica norvegese ed in generale sulla nostra storia musicale. Detto questo, credo ci sia una percezione esagerata di questo fenomeno, al di fuori della Norvegia. Potrei nominarvi una miriade di band norvegesi che molto probabilmente avrebbero suonato nella stessa maniera se l’intero movimento black metal non fosse mai esistito.

There is no denying that the extreme bands that were part of the whole black metal scene during the 90s have had a huge impact on Norwegian music and our musical history. That said though, there seems to be a somewhat exaggerated image of this outside of Norway. I can name you plenty of Norwegian bands that probably would have sounded exactly like they do had the whole black metal thing never happened. 

A breve pubblicherete il nuovo album Crimson Riders: cosa potete dirci in anteprima sulla nuova release? Sarete sempre ‘melodicamente’ arrabbiati e pungenti?

You will soon release your new record Crimson Riders. Can you tell us any anticipations on it? Are you still gonna be ‘melodically’ sharp and angry?

Siamo così fieri di questo album! È un disco diverso, che include sia dei brani in classico stile Bokassa, che pezzi che possiamo definire come dei colpi di scena, volti anche ad attirare l’attenzione di chi ancora non ci conosce. Perciò sì, direi che possiamo decisamente definirlo ‘melodicamente arrabbiato e pungente’!

We are extremely proud of this album! It is a diverse album that includes both songs you could label as ‘classic Bokassa’ and some new twists and turns that might catch the attention of listeners who might not be familiar with us. So indeed, you might very well call it ‘melodically sharp and angry’!
