Intervista ai Redscale

Abbiamo intervistato i berlinesi REDSCALE, giovane band stoner rock, il cui nuovo disco Feed Them to The Lions è appena uscito per Karma Conspiracy Records.

We interviewed the Berliners REDSCALE, a young stoner rock band, whose new album Feed Them to The Lions has just been released by Karma Conspiracy Records.

Quando e come nascono i Redscale?

When and how was Redscale born?

Christian (Guitar): Redscale was founded in the summer of 2015 after Martin (Drums) and me were jamming together for a while. We soon realized that song ideas were coming together quickly so we wanted to start a band. We were searching for a bassist and singer over the internet and after Dennis (Bass) and Henning (Vocals/Guitar) were introducing themselves to us, it all worked out just fine. We all wanted to record songs and play gigs as soon as possible, so we recorded our first EP in early 2016 and started playing shows that year.

Redscale is a technique where the film is exposed on the wrong side. Can you tell us the reason of this photographic reference?

Christian: We couldn’t agree on a bandname that we all liked, we had dozens of names flying around and nothing really satisfied is. I think Dennis came up with the name Redscale. We all liked the name and decided to stick with it.

La scena stoner underground in Germania è cresciuta parecchio negli ultimi tempi. Cosa pensate di questo?

The German underground stoner scene has grown up a lot lately. What do you think about it?

Christian: That’s true and that growth of the German underground heavy rock scene is amazing. Especially the Berlin underground rock scene is so great and diverse. There are so many awesome stoner/heavy rock bands and concerts in Berlin, it’s hard to keep track! There are also a lot of dedicated bookers/promoters/people from the scene out there who are helping keeping that scene alive and prosperating. Also rather small underground venues like “TIEF” or “Toast Hawaii” in Berlin are super important for the underground heavy rock and metal scene as local bands as well as international scene bands from all rock/metal genres get the chance to play their music there to passionate rock audiences.

Do you have any musical reference from the past? Any source of inspiration?

Henning (Vocals/Guitar): I listened to a lot of Metal like Metallica, Pantera, Maiden, early In Flames but also Punk/Hardcore stuff and classic rock, then more and more stoner and 70s stuff like Sabbath, Down, Spiritual Beggars, Hellacopters. The more modern stuff I really love are Bands like Graveyard, The Sword, Orchid, Elder or Kadavar. But like my bandmates I am also very open musically and like a lot of different stuff, from singer-songwriter to indie or pop music. My main vocal Influences, singers i find impressive or interesting, draw of course from the Bands listed, definitely Hetfield, Dio, Bruce Dickinson, Danzig. Joakim Nilsson of Graveyard is one of the best contemporary rock singers out there in my opinion, i also really love Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music and many more.

Ho recentemente visto dal vivo i The Devil and the Almighty Blues e mi hanno lasciato senza fiato!

Christian: All four of us love heavy music, may it be metal, heavy stoner rock or even hardcore. We like intense music and memorable riffs. But we aren’t limited to those genres, we can appreciate music from all rock/metal genres and eras. We also listen to a lot of music that has nothing to do with rock or metal, we are not what you would call “elitist” listeners, I love 80s pop for example haha. Regarding my personal rock influences, of course I have to name Sabbath although it may not show directly in our music as much as in recordings of more traditional stoner rock bands. I am also into classic Heavy Metal like Dio or Maiden. From the more contemporary stuff I listen to Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats and Scandinavian Rock like Turbonegro or Horisont for example. I saw The Devil and the Almighty Blues live recently and they blew me away! I think inspiration for musicians can come from anything tho, not just music.

How was the collaboration between you and Karma Conspiracy Records born?

Christian: I was taking notice of Karma Conspiracy while scrolling Instagram. We contacted them and showed them our new album. They loved it right away and offered us a deal. Karma Conspiracy is a rather small and super dedicated label, always supporting us in any way they can.

July 19th is coming out your new record, Feed Them to the Lions, anticipated by two singles, Hydra and The Hard Rain: why did you choose this title and what does this new release represent to you?

Henning: The title is also the title of the first track of the album, and we all thought it had a really nice ring to it, very intense and foreboding. Thematically it also fits the rest of the album quite well and is just quite memorable and evocative. This new release definitely represents a giant step forward for the band, as we all improved a lot with regards to songwriting, skill and playing together as a band.

What’s the message of your lyrics?

Henning: The new album deals with a lot of themes like the resurgence of fascism and strong-man autocrats, exploitation, war, but also impending doom and personal struggle in an increasingly baleful and bleak climate, but i tried to not be too nihilistic and incorporate humour and even a glimmer of hope here and there.

Compared to the 2016 debut record, how has your songwriting changed?

Christian: The biggest change is the fact that Henning contributed his guitar work to this new album for the first time. In the past we always wanted him to not just sing but also play guitar live and on the recordings but he wanted to focus on the vocals first. With this new album he brought some super tasty riffs and guitar melodies to the table that complemented the songs so well. We worked on those new songs for a long time to refine them and to make them as interesting and gripping as possible. Each bandmember stepped up their game for this album. I feel like that this album defines the Redscale sound so much more than the previous recordings. We want to thank our studio engineers Jan Oberg and Roland “Role” Wiegner, who were super nice to work with. Their skills and advices were a significant contribution to this album.

Che rapporto avete con i social network? Cosa pensate a riguardo?

How’s the relationship between you and social networks?

Christian: I think that social media networks offer an opportunity for lesser known bands to present their music to people around the world. If you want your music to be heard it’s inevitable to use social media platforms and other digital services. We discovered so many good small bands through the mighty power of the internet. There are lots of talented bands far away from the mainstream.

Do you have any projects for the future?

Christian: We have a really cool animated music video in the pipeline for our song “Unstuck in Time”, a feast for the eyes! Besides that, we are constantly coming up with new song ideas, it’s so much fun to develop those ideas and build new songs, letting them cook slowly until they are ready for the final seasoning.
